Five End-of-Year Tasks to Complete Before Summer Break
Before closing the library doors for the season, use this checklist to leave a well-maintained collection and set yourself up for a smooth start next fall.

A few focused hours at year-end can make all the difference come September.
Before closing the library doors for a final time this school year, review this checklist to leave a well-maintained collection, accurate circulation records, appreciated volunteers, and ensure a smooth start to the next school year.
1. Conduct Inventory and Assess Your Collection
- Begin with your highest-circulation areas.
- Keep a book cart nearby with sections labeled "Reshelve," "Repair," and "Replace/Weed."
- Note any shelving frustrations, overcrowded sections, or popular genres that need expansion.
2. Clean Up Circulation Data
- Review overdue and lost-item reports.
- Close student and teacher accounts who are no longer at your school.
- Follow up on books that are of high value, difficult to replace, or frequently circulated.
3. Weed During Returns and Inventory
- Discard books beyond repair.
- Review outdated titles, especially nonfiction.
- Remove books that no longer circulate.
4. Show Appreciation to Volunteers
- Write a personal thank-you note.
- Have students create cards or posters.
- Host a simple coffee bar or breakfast.
- Feature volunteers in the school newsletter or on social media.
5. Keep Back-to-School Materials Easily Accessible
- Library orientation materials
- First week displays
- Professional Development Supplies (markers, chart paper, etc.)
